Overview
This research report was produced by Wendy Hirsh in August 2006.
It examines whether the formal dialogue in performance appraisal between an employee and their manager is effective in improving the employee's performance.
Through input from nearly 30 HR managers, case studies of six organisations and in-depth interviews with over 30 employees, the characteristics of effective appraisals are revealed, how they can be used to align individual and organisational goals and different appraisal techniques.
We draw conclusions on the extent to which appraisals can improve performance, the factors which may help or hinder their effectiveness and anticipate future trends in the area.
