People and Change During Restructuring
Research Reports
7 August 2009
Overview
Over 80 mainly international organisations took part in a definitive research project by CRF and DBM to examine the causes, trends, issues and practices behind their restructuring efforts. Almost all had restructured over the last 18 months and 85% plan to do so in the next 12 months. For eight in ten respondents, restructuring was as much about positioning for future recovery and growth as cost. Almost all workforces were affected, some to a large degree.
Among the people impacts and risks were negative staff reactions, people-related business effects, talent/skills issues, reduced levels of engagement and redundancies. Less than half of managers understood what the impacts might be before restructuring began and were prepared well enough to manage them. Case notes from nine organisations in this Research Briefing reveal a range of contrasting approaches and practices. The implications for leaders, managers and HR are discussed, supported by useful tips and guidelines.
