The Age of Fluidity - HR's Challenge

The inter-action between demographics, globalization and regulation is creating a fluid market environment in which, the old dictum ‘structure follows strategy' has been turned on its head.

As a result, HR professionals find themselves increasingly in a fire-fighting mode to the extent that strategic HR has become a vacuously empty phrase. To make it more meaningful, one needs to understand the nature of the interaction as well as the challenges created by it.

This half-day workshop delivered by Prof Amin Rajan looked at some of the key issues that HR need to address to help their businesses succeed in these ever-changing days.

Professor Amin Rajan is CEO of CREATE, a pan-European network of researchers. He is author of numerous books and articles on leadership, business cultures, diversity, socio-economic forecasting, new technologies and the future of financial services.

This workshop was led by Professor Amin Rajan, CEO of CREATE-Research and a leading UK authority on leadership, new business models, globalisation HR and diversity. It described the current business context - the Age of Fluidity - and how four key drivers are affecting work, the work environment, people management and HR.

The main drivers are demographics, globalisation, regulation and a polarisation of workforce attitudes and expectations. Responding effectively to these issues requires HR functions to think more strategically about what it does. The notion of ‘strategic HR' is examined in the Review, along with the critical topics of risk management and HR - and how HR can exert influence at the top. Lessons and checklists are provided.
