So, what standard should HR and OD aspire to in contributing to strategic thinking and the effectiveness of strategy implementation? How should leaders in these areas interact with senior colleagues to think outside the box as well as cope with immediate priorities - and to decode, shape and play ‘new games with new rules'?
In this half-day workshop, supported by a CRF Research Briefing, Gordon Hewitt drew on his worldwide research, teaching and consultancy among global corporations to examine the new demands on corporate strategy and competitiveness. Together with David Brennan, Chief Executive of AstraZeneca, he urged HR directors to rethink the basis of being an effective ‘strategic partner', and what this implies for HR's future role and value-creation scorecard.

This Masterclass featured alternative ways of thinking about strategy, corporate competitiveness and HR's contribution at a strategic level.
We examined the 'new competitive landscape' to gain insights into exploiting new challenges, discussed different perspectives and questions for rethinking HR's contribution to the strategy process, and reviewed HR's role in overall competitiveness.
With a case study from AstraZeneca, Masterclass leader, Dr Gordon Hewitt, shared his models for planning and managing strategy. Group discussions assessed the challenges for HR, leading to recommendations for moving forward.
