Who is it for?
Those who are interested in improving organisation performance, including HR and OD directors, and those who focus on change and organisational improvement, performance management, reward and talent.
Overview
Performance management encompasses far more than reward and appraisal systems. Moreover, high performance is far more than creating a collection of talented individuals. This significant project will delve incisively into what is required to create a consistently high-performing organisation.
Content
The workshop will cover three topics.
The challenges of defining and measuring performance
We have to consider issues such as what is meant by performance, balancing financial and non-financial aspects, the interrelationship of tangible results and behaviour, the short vs long term view, and the contribution of individuals, teams and broader networks. This is not straight forward work and a review of the issues will be presented that draws on previous work undertaken by Professor Sir Andrew Likierman, Dean of London Business School.
Fit-for-purpose performance management systems
Outlining a ‘quality assurance' checklist, including achieving clarity of purpose, simplicity of operation, ensuring accurate and fair differentiation, the quality of judgement and feedback, presentation of hard and soft data, ownership by the line, and what comprises value-added support from HR.
High performance work systems
Reviewing research conducted by Dr André de Waal, a specialist in high performance work systems, and introducing a diagnostic tool for participants to use in their organisations.
Follow-on work
After the workshop, we will elicit the support of three member organisations to work with André de Waal to try out his methodology, with a view to reporting back at a subsequent meeting.

This workbook takes a practical approach to the topic and is based on CRF's workshop of May 2010. It examines the implications of high performance and poses three significant question sets for members to complete. What is HR doing about performance improvement? Are you improving the individual or the organisation? Do you have robust business and HR processes? Suggestions from workshop attendees are provided, along with a case study on Serco and guidelines. In addition, two contrasting, and practical, approaches are described - high performance work systems and an integrated framework with 35 characteristics of high performance.
