Recent Research on Performance Management: Does Anything Work?

Presentation content

This presentation explores the research on performance management practices and their effectiveness that hhas been carried out by Gerry Ledford and colleague at the Center for Effective Organisations in the US. The focus of the presentation is on the following research projects:

  • Survey of cutting edge practices for WorldatWork
  • Quasi-experimental study of tatingless appraisal in an insurance firm
  • Two studies of performance feedback culture

Particular focus is placed on the use of ratingless appraisals and whether there is any benefit in using this technique to evaluate performance. If your organisation is already using ratingless appraisals, or if you are thinking of ditching ratings altogether, this will be a valuable resource.

All studies mentioned in the presentation can be accessed in full at the the Cutting-Edge Performance Management Hub on the CEO webiste.

Download the presentation for an overview of the research.

Employee Engagement: Current Practices and Practicalities

The concept of employee engagement has provoked a great deal of debate since being introduced 25 years ago. Its supporters would claim that engagement programmes can enhance organisational performance when the energy generated from engagement is routed on the path needed to achieve organisational goals. This is CRF's third report on the subject of engagement and focuses on what is currently happening in organisations in practice, and looking for similarities and differences across cultures, sectors and types of workforce. The report explores what business imperatives stimulate organisations to take engagement initiatives, the frameworks they adopt, what they hope to achieve and what is really happening in getting managers, employees and others to behave differently.
