Video: The Misuse of Data

  • June 14, 2022

Data has always been a key part of the decision-making process. Its availability, however, has never been so prolific as it is now, nor has the reliance on it been as great. Whether by accident or otherwise, both these forces mean the likelihood of data misguiding decision-making is far more common than ever before. With both trends set to continue, it is key for business leaders to spot when they are being presented with flawed evidence.

The 2022 Summer Lecture welcomed back the highly entertaining Ben Goldacre who shared a ‘greatest hits’ of people misusing statistics in interesting ways. A doctor, academic and award-winning writer, Ben specialises in unpicking scientific claims made by scaremongers and armchair experts. His session challenged attendees to be more evidence-driven in our work and to adopt a healthy scepticism towards the unsubstantiated claims often made by ‘so-called experts’.

The accompanying Post Meeting Notes summarise the lecture, and video below was taken from the event.
