In this Talent, Leadership & Learning Community webinar, we will be joined by Langley Sharp, former Head of the Centre for Army Leadership, who will lead a thought-provoking discussion on the fundamentals of leadership and what organisations can learn from the British Army’s approach to developing leaders for the complex and fast-changing challenges they face.
Drawing on his experience as Langley will explore:
- How these insights can be applied in organisational contexts today.
- How leadership capability can be built deliberately and at scale
- The importance of developing a leadership doctrine that underpins the practice of leadership and development of leaders
- What the British Army’s leadership model reveals about developing leaders under pressure
- The role of followership
- How these insights can be applied in organisational contexts today.
This community is intended for senior talent, learning, and leadership professionals responsible for attracting, developing, and retaining talent within their organisation. It offers an excellent platform for sharing, discussing, and comparing challenges and successes with peers.

Gillian Pillans
Research Director, Corporate Research Forum
Gillian has worked as a senior HR practitioner and OD specialist for several organisations including Swiss Re, Vodafone and BAA. Prior to her HR career, she was a management consultant with Deloitte Consulting and is also a qualified solicitor. Gillian has written various CRF reports on subjects including HR strategy, organisation design and development, leadership development, coaching and diversity.

Langley Sharp, MBE
Author | Former Head of the Centre for Army Leadership, British Army | Director, Frontier Leadership
Langley Sharp MBE is the former head of the Centre for Army Leadership, responsible for championing leadership excellence across the British Army. Having himself graduated from Sandhurst two decades ago, his career in the Parachute Regiment, which included operational command at every rank, saw him deployed to Northern Ireland, Macedonia, Afghanistan and Iraq.
Among his many varied roles, he led a counter-insurgency Task Force operation, commanded a Parachute Regiment Battalion and delivered the Ministry of Defence’s training programme for the London 2012 Olympics venue security, for which he was awarded an MBE. He is the author of the British Army’s official account of leadership, The Habit of Excellence, distilling over three centuries of the Army’s experience in the art, science and practice of leadership.
