Briefing Paper: Diversity and Inclusion: Emerging Issues

The purpose of this Briefing Paper is to explore the challenges associated with building more inclusive workplaces for racial/ethnic minority colleagues, and the emerging opportunities and challenges around inclusion in remote working environments. Specifically, we look at how the Black Lives Matter movement is reshaping conversation and practice, and we explore what HR can do – in practical terms – to harness the new opportunities remote working brings for diversity while making sure that teams maintain inclusive practices.

Bird&Bird: Horizon Scanning

Since Bird&Bird's last edition of Horizon Scanning the world has taken a turn that none of us could have predicted. COVID-19 and the tragic death of George Floyd guarantee that the workplace and indeed the workforce will never again be quite the same. COVID-19 has cast the world into a deep recession but its effects are not uniformly felt either by geography or sector. For some employers the priority is cost cutting, for others it is talent attraction and expansion. This edition of Horizon Scanning cannot hope to do more than provide a snapshot of a rapidly changing workplace.

Culture Tool

Professor John Weeks, Professor of Organizational Behavior, IMD Business School introduced a tool to help leaders think about how they can be intentional about the way they shape the culture around them. The tool distinguishes between two types of change: talk-based change and behavior-based change. Both are important, but the talk-based part typically gets more attention. Talk-based change means making the case for the change: why this change and why now? How does the culture change connect to strategy and success? How can we create a sense of urgency and, equally important, a sense of opportunity for the change? Why is this change worth the sacrifice it will entail.
