Work Psychology Series

Our new Work Psychology Series, sponsored by Advanced People Strategies (APS), explores both the classic foundations of work psychology and the latest theories and evidence in key areas directly relevant to HR activities. This series will be of particular interest to senior HR professionals responsible for the design and delivery of HR practices and policies.

An important purpose of HR is to design and implement practices which shape employee behaviour in ways that help the business achieve its goals. Work psychology is a critical part of this process as it underpins the link between HR practices and employee behaviour. Every aspect of HR practice requires a sound understanding of the principles that drive the behaviours we aim to shape.

For each event in the series, we will provide senior HR professionals with:

  1. A clear grounding in the scientific theory and evidence around each work psychology topic.
  2. Insight into how this body of theory and evidence can be applied to HR practices.
  3. An understanding of how applying work psychology theory and evidence can make HR more effective.

Each session will feature expert input from leading voices in the field, including Professor Rob Briner, a highly respected organisational psychologist and research leader known for his pioneering work on evidence-based HR. Rob will share his extensive knowledge and experience in applying psychological principles to organisational practice.

Who is this event for?

This event is designed for senior HR professionals who:

  • Have experience applying principles of organisational psychology in the workplace.
  • Wish to strengthen their understanding of how work psychology can improve employee performance and productivity.
  • Are interested in the latest academic research and how it relates to HR practice.
  • Work in generalist roles or Centres of Expertise such as OD & Transformation, Talent, Employee Experience or Organisation Effectiveness.

Session 3:
Behaviour Change

The HR function implements many policies and practices from reward to training with the intention of shaping or changing employee behaviour.

In this online session, Professor Rob Briner will explore:

  • What specific behaviours are required (and why).
  • Whether such behaviours can be changed in principle and the major psychological theories behind behaviour change.
  • The evidence for interventions aimed at influencing behaviour.
  • Whether changing attitudes really changes behaviour.
  • How this psychological research can inform and enhance the work of HR functions.

After presenting, Rob will take audience questions.

Prof. Rob Briner

Professor of Organisational Psychology at the School of Business and Management, Queen Mary University of London

Rob is Professor of Organizational Psychology at Queen Mary, University of London and Associate Research Director at CRF. He is also currently a Visiting Professor of Evidence-Based HRM at Birkbeck University of London and Professor at Oslo Nye Høyskole. He was previously co-founder and Scientific Director of the Center for Evidence-Based Management and has held positions at the Institute for Employment Studies, London School of Economics, Kings’s College (University of London), Bath University and University of Edinburgh. His publishing and research focus on topics including wellbeing, emotions, stress, motivation and everyday work behaviour.
