Work Psychology Series
Our new Work Psychology Series, sponsored by Advanced People Strategies (APS), explores both the classic foundations of work psychology and the latest theories and evidence in a number of key areas directly relevant to HR activities. For this reason, this series will be of particular interest to those senior HR professionals responsible for the design and delivery of HR practices and policies.
An important purpose of HR is to design and implement practices which shape employee behaviour in ways that help the business achieve its goals. Work psychology is a critical part of this process as it underpins the link between HR practices and employee behaviour. Every aspect of HR practice requires a sound understanding of the underlying principles that drive the behaviours we aim to shape.
For each event in the series, we will provide senior HR professionals with:
- A solid grounding in the scientific theory and evidence around each work psychology topic,
- Opportunities to discuss how this body of theory and evidence can be applied to HR practices in general and to HR practices in their own contexts,
- An understanding of how applying work psychology theory and evidence can make HR more effective.
The sessions will combine expert input with discussion and knowledge sharing by practitioners. Attendees will be expected to come prepared to share examples and experiences from their practice.

Who is this event for?
We expect to convene senior HR professionals with:
- Knowledge of applying principles of organisational psychology in the workplace so experiences can be shared for peer learning,
- A desire to enhance their understanding of organisational psychology and how it can improve employee performance and productivity,
- An interest in understanding and applying the latest academic research relating to organisational psychology,
- Experience working in generalist roles or CoE’s including OD & transformation, Talent, employee experience and/or organisation effectiveness.
Session 1:
Motivation and Work Performance
Explaining what drives behaviour and what sustains it is one of the oldest topics in work psychology, particularly as it applies to understanding work performance.
Attendees will:
- Learn how the theory of motivation has developed over time,
- Identify the latest theories about motivation at work,
- Appreciate the links between motivation theories and performance,
- Share their experiences and learn from others, discussing how the theories can be applied to manage performance in their own contexts.

APS: Motivation and Performance: Leadership’s Critical Role (13.00 – 14.00)
In today’s fast-paced, ever-changing world, HR leaders hold the key to shaping workplace culture, driving employee engagement and ensuring organisations thrive.
In volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) environments, aligning employee behaviours with organisational strategy is essential. Measuring motivation, personality and engagement may already be happening – but more importantly, what’s the data indicating, who needs to know and how should they use it? Effectively interpreting data to address real challenges is critical.

This session will look into the factors that influence motivation – both positively and negatively, how change impacts employee behaviour, and how HR can mitigate destructive behaviours while enhancing performance.
With HR in the position to drive alignment and organisational success, this masterclass will focus on how diagnostics and skills come together to support leaders in maintaining employee engagement.

Prof. Rob Briner
Professor of Organisational Psychology at the School of Business and Management, Queen Mary University of London
Rob is Professor of Organizational Psychology at Queen Mary, University of London and Associate Research Director at CRF. He is also currently a Visiting Professor of Evidence-Based HRM at Birkbeck University of London and Professor at Oslo Nye Høyskole. He was previously co-founder and Scientific Director of the Center for Evidence-Based Management and has held positions at the Institute for Employment Studies, London School of Economics, Kings’s College (University of London), Bath University and University of Edinburgh. His publishing and research focus on topics including wellbeing, emotions, stress, motivation and everyday work behaviour.
